Classes June 5-13

You are required to be in class, on time, June 5-13th.  Cuts will still be entered & affect your 4th MP average.

However, the Regents Exam is the culmination of the course, so I will not be issuing any more Global work after the exam.  Unless we are directed otherwise, you are expected to bring your Regents Review materials/homework from your Math or Science classes with you to do during your Global period on those days.  You may also bring work for your English portfolio that may be due.  You will NOT be allowed to sleep, use your phone, or chat with each other.  This will be a silent, academic study hall for you to get work done or study for other upcoming exams.

As the Regents is before finals, there will be no final exam.

If we are directed to do something different, I will update you.  Until &/or if that happens, the above beings on Wednesday, June 5th.

June 3rd Regents Exam Info

As of this post, your testing rooms are as follows:
Rachel Martinez, Josael Sanchez, Ronil Cubias Perez, & Javeria Khalid are to report to room 1104 (in Ross.)  You have extended time...BE SURE YOU USE THIS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!  You will need to enter through the Sonderling Building & walk over to Ross once they release students from the cafeteria.

As of right now, everyone else is to report to 1825, which is next door to our classroom.

Everyone needs:

  • Current school ID
  • Multiple, identical pens (standard blue or black ink) - NO GEL PENS!!!

Your exam will begin by 8 am and last for 3 hours.  You will not be released before the 3 hours is up, so either you sit in the room & work on your exam for the full 3 hours or you just sit there.  Only I can release you early, and I am not doing it.  You need every last minute to complete this exam.

You will have to turn in any electronics you bring with you when you enter the building (phones, iWatches, etc.)  Earbuds will not be allowed in the classroom, so be sure you leave them home.

There is a regular bus pick up in the morning, just like any other school day.

If you are late to the exam, you lose that time.

We will not be handing out pens or supplies.

5/31 Review & 7 pm End Time

I have 7 of you signed up until 7 pm for Friday.  While it is only half of the number required, I will stay with you.  If you are only signed up until 5:30 but have now changed your mind, please be sure to let me know tomorrow so I can add you to that list AND read the original post so your ride is on time.

Please be sure your ride is there at 7 pm to get you as I have a commitment Friday night & cannot stay & wait with you.  That means you'll be outside, as it gets dark, alone.  Possibly in rain/storms.  You cannot stay in the building at that time without adult supervision, and I will not be there after 7 pm to supervise.  I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.

Have pizza money, pens, highlighter, drink/water bottle with you whether you are staying until 5:30 or 7 pm.

Thinkwave & Online Exams

Your Thinkwave averages are now updated & current through work due today, 5/28.

For those of you not doing the online exams, you are:

  • Getting absolutely no review because you aren't even looking at the exam questions, and you need it THE MOST if you've done no HW
  • Setting yourself up for a very low 4th MP average
  • Setting yourself up for failing the course, which you will be required to repeat before moving on to 11th grade US History
  • Failing the Regents Exam since, as mentioned, you have done little, at most, to prepare yourself for Monday's exam which, again, is required for graduation.

As a reminder, you get no extra credit for review time when you don;t complete your work, and that includes online exams, video worksheets, review HW (including all directions followed.)  SO if you didn't do work that closed on 5/24, 5/25, or 5/26, don't expect any extra credit for review time on 5/23.  Same is true this week.

And you are literally out of time.  Your 4th MP grades end on 6/3.  What you've done, good or bad, is finished.

Ch 36 Exam Questions & General Issues

I received several emails over the weekend regarding your Chapter 36 Exam.  Every question was a multiple choice question, & I have a "fake account" so I can do the exams, just like you.  I did the exam and had no issues with any questions, including no issue entering a choice for any question.  If you went over the time limit per question, you were "timed out."  You had 3 minutes per question...and on Monday you have only ONE MINUTE per question or you will not finish the exam.

ALSO DUE 5/29: Signed Thinkwave Sheets

Thinkwave printouts were handed out in class on Thursday, 5/23.  They are due back, signed, at the start of class on Wednesday, 5/29.  They are to be in the dark blue bin by the start of class, just like HW.  Late sheets will not be accepted for credit.

If you were not in class on 5/23, you must print out the entire 4th MP of your grades & have your parent/guardian sign it.  Not one page, not a summary sheet, all of your 4th MP grades.  Failure to do this will lead to a total loss of credit.  It is due 5/29, same as everyone else.  No extension will be given.

There were some entries made after review Thursday, so the sheet you have may not necessarily be your current average.  However, all HW submitted through 5/23 was entered into Thinkwave before I left.

If you turned it in but have a 0, check the comments I made on your paper & the post with the requirements for credit.  You likely didn't follow the directions or complete the assignment if a 0 is entered for you.  Same deal when you don't follow Regents rules on Regents Exam day...

LAST CHANCE: May 31st Review is the LAST Review

This is your very last Regents Review before your exam.  You are more than foolish is you fail to sign up for it.  Overwhelming & with few exceptions, your review homework has been atrocious.  You need all the help you can get, & you are officially out of time.  It's a last ditch effort to pass now, or repeat the course/exam.

We will be doing multiple choice & enduring issues essay practice skills.  There will be no flash cards in pairs.  Bring your pens & a highlighter.  Bring your water or water bottle.  Bring your money for pizza.

Your very last extra credit opportunity:

  • If 25 of you sign up & show up (on time & remain for the entire review), I will give you all an additional 10 extra credit points (if you qualify.)  There are currently 7 signed up.
  • If 15 of you sign up to stay until 7 pm, I will add another 10 to your points (again, if you qualify, so get your online tests & HW done.)  You MUST have a ride home, your ride must be on time, you must put "7 pm" next to your name on the sign up sheet.

There is only one day left to sign up for review, Wednesday, 5/29 (the day we get back from break.)
That's it.
You have just 3 days of classes before your exam.
That's it.

You are 100% out of time and, based on the work I'm seeing in class (or your complete lack of work), you don't "got this."

Your Multiple Choice Scores Today & 5/23 Regents Review

I have never had such low results in multiple choice, especially after weeks of flash cards & Regents Review.  Then again, I have never had so few kids actually attend review or do their HW all year, especially Regents Review HW.

Multiple choice is content-driven.  You have to know stuff to get the right answer.  The only way to do that is study.  In this case, it appears that, too, is not happening the way it needs to, so I am changing review.

Review tomorrow will be all multiple choice.  You will do multiple choice drills for the entire time you are there, less the time it takes to eat.  Because of this, there are a few changes effective as of tomorrow review:
1.  You must have several pens with you
2.  You must have a highlighter with you

AND, based on those scores today, I will allow you to sign up for tomorrow's review if you aren't already on the list before 7:20 am tomorrow morning.  I will be in the classroom until then.  Bring $1.25 per slice of pizza you want to order as well as a water bottle or your own drink.

Next Friday, your last review before your exam (5/31) will be run the same way.

You saw your multiple choice score.  You see your CRQ scores for your HW & today in class. If you still don't show up, be sure you have time to go to summer school, or time to repeat the class.  This is your reality, not a scare tactic.

Tomorrow: pens & highlighter, drink, & money for pizza. 2-%;30, bus passes provided.

If you aren't signed up already, get to 1823 by 7:20 to get yourself signed up.

May 31st Regents Review

There will only be 1 day to sign up for the 5/31 Friday Regents Review.  Those at Friday review get first chance to sign up, & the remaining spaces open up on the following Monday & end Wednesday.  However, we are off this Monday & Tuesday, leaving only Wednesday for you to sign up (unless you are at review on 5/23, you can also sign up that night.)

That is the LAST REVIEW before your Regents Exam.  Look at your HW & Castle Learning scores, & decide if a few Fridays at review is worth it compared to 6 weeks in summer school, or 40 weeks back in the same course...

Bonus points, 5/20 ONLY

If you are in good standing daily for the upcoming week & sign up for this week's review tomorrow (Monday, 5/20), I will give you double extra points for this week's review (7 points.)

As an added bonus to those of you who signed up for this week already at review on 5/7, you will get 2.5 extra credit points per hour on Friday (8.5.)

DUE 5/31: Review Book pp. 262-266

ASSIGNMENT:
Review Book pages 262-266.

Please note: if the directions are not followed, you will receive no credit for the assignment.

You can always turn in an assignment early, but I will not permit them to be turned in late.  As previously posted, all work is due in the dark blue bin on my desk before I begin class.  If you used more than 1 sheet of paper, your work must be staked together in order.  Late work will not be accepted or graded.

GRADING:

Because there is a little more time involved, these will count as Quiz grades.  Your Castle Leaning will continue to count as exam grades, and being prepared for class/participating will continue to count as class work.

DIRECTIONS:

  • This work is all done on separate paper.
  • Your heading must include:
    • your full name, class period, due date of assignment, & the page numbers of the assignment.
  • If you skip any part of the assignment or directions, you will receive a zero on the assignment.  All 3 parts make up the assignment.
  • Label each section of your work "M/C," "CRQ," & "EI."
  • For the multiple choice:
    • Make a list down your paper of the number of questions, and write only the number/letter of your answer choice.

  • For the CRQ:
    • You must number & write out each answer.  DO not write out the question.  I am grading these like I have to on regents Day, so be sure our answer is "enough" to get credit.
    • Do not do Question 2b (the reliability question) - it was removed by the Regents Exam back in March.  You must do all other questions.
  • For the EI document:
    • You are to write a paragraph or two, but no more.  You are not writing an essay, but you are writing an introduction (maybe more, it all depends) on which your grade will be based.
    • If you write  list and not a paragraph(s) with complete sentences you will receive no credit for the assignment.
    • Your paragraph(s) must include all of the following the receive credit:
      • Identify one EI based on the document
      • Define that EI
      • Write a thesis statement (I think they call it a "claim" in your English classes.)

        • What you are proving is your "claim" or thesis statement.
      • Defend your claim using the document.  Write "(D)" at the end of the sentence so I know.)
      • Write "(OI)" after your outside facts so I can check them.
      • Use at least 1 outside fact about that document topic to also defend your claim.

        • For example: The EI of change in the USSR is positive because.... and then prove it.  This is just ONE example, and what you decide to prove is up to you.
        • What you are proving is your "claim" or thesis statement.
      • Defend your claim using the document.  Write "(D)" at the end of the sentence so I know.)
      • Write "(OI)" after your outside facts so I can check them.

You want to read this post...

THIS WEEK ONLY!

If you are in good standing for this week & sign up for review TOMORROW (Tuesday, 5/14) I will give you TRIPLE EXTRA CREDIT POINTS for this week only!  (That's 10.5 points added directly to your average for this week alone, for those of you skipping Math Regents Review...)

If you are NOT in good standing & sign up tomorrow, I will give you regular extra credit, which you would otherwise not get because you chose to not be in good standing.  That's 3.5 points directly on your average.  (Could have been 10.5 if you had done your job this week.)

This offer will NOT be extended past your class period tomorrow.  There are only 15 spots left.  Come to 1823 before 7:15 tomorrow morning if you want to be sure you get one of those spots.

As a little side bonus for those of you already signed up...people in good standing will get an extra 2 points (so 12.5), people not in good standing will get the regular extra credit deal above.

If you wait until Wednesday you won't get this deal.

5/10 Review Extra Credit Info

I have the review sign-up sheets from 5/10.  If you signed up & attend all 3 remaining Friday reviews, I will honor those extra credit points.

Last chance for failing & extra credit...

Anyone who gets an 85 or better 4th MP average AND a 90 or better on the Regents Exam will receive a passing grade for the course.  For some, this is your very last chance to earn course credit & avoid summer school or repeating the course next year.  As a reminder, you do not pass the course just because you pass the Regents Exam.

Here is the quote from NYS regarding this, & the link for the state website:
In accordance with Section 100.5(a)(5)(v) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education (http://www.p12.nysed.gov/part100/home.html), passing the Regents Exam in a subject shall not be construed as having earned a unit of credit in that subject unless the student also passes the course as offered in a registered high school.

Thinkwave, Failing Grades, & 5/10 Review

You still have a few grades that I have entered, but all of your exams have been updated in Thinkwave.  If you are failing, or near failing, and not signed up for Friday's review, I highly recommend you sign up.  You are OUT OF TIME.  Unless you plan on repeating the course AND retaking the Regents Exam, you should be on that list tomorrow.

You have 16 classes until your exam.
You have just 4 review left.

Signed up for review but didn't attend? Read me.

As of last night, there are only 15 spots remaining for the review on Friday, 5/10.

If you signed up but failed to show up for review yesterday, 5/3, you cannot sign up for this week's review until Wednesday, 5/8, if there are spots left.

If you sign up & blow off review once, you are wait-listed for future reviews.

If you sign up & don't show a second time, you remove yourself from any future extra credit opportunity and can longer sign up for my reviews.

You made a commitment.  Honor it.

Extra, Extra Extra-Credit: Nothing else will be offered this year!

If you clicked to read this post, be sure you read it all the way to the end.
Reminder:
You only get the "extra" extra credit if you meet all the requirements for the week AND attend MY Friday review for that same week.  If you do not attend MY review that week, OR you do not meet the qualification as stated, there is no extra credit and certainly no "extra" extra credit.  See this post:

In other words, if you are late any day, absent any day, do not have the work due OR work needed on any day during the week, you are disqualified from extra points.  You are HIGHLY encouraged to attend review anyway, whether that is my Friday review or Dept. offered review (list has been posted in classroom since before break.)  If you DO meet those conditions but do not attend MY Friday review, there are no extra credit points given.  Please re-read the link above, which states this clearly.

Now...just to make it more enticing for you to be prepared & attend review sessions, here's something extra-extra:

OPPORTUNITY #1:
IF you meet all the conditions above, including my Friday review for that week, and you attend a SATURDAY review, you will get DOUBLE POINTS.  You must be there ON TIME, and you must stay for the ENTIRE review.  You slip must be signed by the teacher stating that you were on time & stayed until the end, or it will not be accepted.  This is your job to do and is NOT stated on the regular slips you will need to get filled out.  You can get the slip needed from me the Friday before your review, tell me before your class starts.  I will not be able to get a slip for you after class & will not entertain disruptions about this during class. To be clear, the "Saturday" is the day AFTER the Friday review, not a week later.

All slips must be turned in the Monday after review to be accepted.  Any slips turned in late will not be honored & no points will be granted.

OPPORTUNITY #2:
IF you meet all the conditions above, including my Friday review for that week, & you attend 3 hours of  Dept. review in any given week (can be split up over the week but must total 3 hours) I will DOUBLE MY review points for Friday of that week.  You can get the slip needed from me the day of your review, tell me before your class starts.  I will not be able to get a slip for you after class & will not entertain disruptions about this during class.

All slips must be turned in at the start of your class the day after the review to be accepted.  Any slips turned in late will not be honored & no points will be granted.
