RESCHEDULED FOR 1/17 Ch 26 Content Exam

RESCHEDULED FOR 1/17.
m/u date is 1/27, same time & location as stated below.

Your Chapter 26 old-style content question quiz/test will be on Friday, 1/10.  The Quizlet Review has been open since 12/19.  If you have been in class, paid attention, done your homework, and study you should do very well on the test.  STUDY THE REVIEW IN QUIZLET!  Remember, all previous chapters are fair game to show up on your exam so be sure to review those topics in Quizlet, too!

Make up for legal absences is before school (per my make-up policy), last day to make up is Tuesday, 1/14.  Failure to make-up the exam will result in a zero for that test.  Cuts & illegal absences cannot be made up, and anyone late to class will not receive extra time on the exam.  Make-up period ends at 7:15 AM.  To have the same amount of time for the test as was offered in lass, you must arrive to 1823 by 6:45 AM.  You can arrive after that time, but your time ends at 7:15 AM.

There is no Stimulus Exam for this chapter, so your Ch 26 Video Sheet (not packet) is due this day as well.

If you can't come before school to make up the exam don't be absent for it!

Period 8 Update

Several of you have emailed me with the same name & confirmed my suspicions - thank you.

With the exception of that person, your extra credit is reinstated for the exams.  Everyone will continue to turn in phones on quiz/test days.  Some of you will now be required to turn them in daily.

Absent Monday? Read This.

If you were legally absent Monday you missed a 5 minute quiz on Capitalism & Communism.  You may make this up Wednesday or Thursday, 6:50-7:10 am in 1823.  I have to leave the room at 7:15.  Failure to make this quiz up will result in a grade of 0.

Period 8

Updates:

1.  The extra credit you lost today is NOT the "Festive Extra Credit."  It is the extra credit on the EXAMS.  Please continue to participate on Festive Spirit Week!

2.  If you would like to tel me to whom the offending phone from today belongs, you may email me to do so.  You will remain 100% anonymous to everyone but me (unless I can't tell who you are from your email, then you are absolutely 100% anonymous.)  If I have the name, or the person comes forward via email, I will restore the exam extra credit for the rest of you.

3.  Unless this is resolved by the time I get to school tomorrow, I will be collecting all phones for your class daily.

Don't forget to study.

Time's up!

The last chance, final deadline has now passed.

I hope you emailed to participate in the
"last chance" extra credit.

One last chance...

Didn't bother to read the extra credit post?

I hope you learned your lesson.

In the spirit of the holidays,
I will offer you one. last. chance.

If you email me by noon on Sunday,
I will allow you to participate for 5 points on your average.
See the original posts for details & directions.
(Be sure to follow the directions or you will not be approved.)

Festive Week Questions, Answers, & Clarifications

To answer some questions I was asked during the week:

1.  Yes, an animal dressed for Christmas, etc. on your shirt counts (depending on the theme of the day of course.)

2.  No, a Santa hat or Reindeer headband by themselves do not count.  Pair it with a red shirt (or white, or black, or a combo like Santa's suit has) with the hat.  If a Reindeer, do the same in brown, etc.  Elves usually wear green or yellow but any bright primary color should do, especially if it matches your headband/hat.

3.  Yes, of course Christmas/Holiday/Winter Onesie's count as comfy!!!

4.  No, your formal wear does not have to be red or green. Yes, it can be a very nice outfit you would wear to Church, etc., fancy dinner, or a party where you need to be "dressed."

5.  "I can't get dressed Thursday because of the concert."  Actually, you will be neatly dressed for the concert already, and that counts.  However, if you are scheduled to perform during your class period with me, you must come to be before 7:20 am to show me you are here & dressed.  Failure to do this means you are "absent."  See below.  (I am in ISS 1st period, if your bus gets you to school at 7:20, you can find me there before 7:35 but must have permission from your teacher if you are missing class to find me.  I will not issue a pass because you are late to class.)

6.  "What if I'm absent one day?"  Then you lose the points.  Same if you are late to class any day next week.  The rules were clear - all in or all out.

7.  "I don't have an ugly Holiday t-shirt or sweater."  Make one.  Get an old t-shirt & staple garland to it.  Add Christmas ornaments, balls, etc. from the Dollar Store if you want.  Be creative.  it's supposed to be ugly & hideous & make us laugh.

8.  No, you don't have to celebrate Christmas to participate.  It's in the spirit of holiday fun.  Any holiday at this time of year will do - Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Winter Solstice...whatever.

Other questions?  Email me.  If I have time to read emails this weekend I'll either respond to you directly or add your question here.

Buh Bye 10 Easy & Fun Points...

Festive Extra Credit - Read the ENTIRE Post to Participate

What do you say we have a Festive Challenge next week (12/16)?  Winners will (1) likely get themselves in some candid Yearbook pictures (since we are, literally, across the hall from the adviser!) & (2) earn some extra credit. Read through to the end to see how to start getting the points!

The Rules (it's me, you know there are going to be rules!!)
1.  You have to participate every day - Monday - Friday.  There is no partial credit.  You're all in or you're out!!

ONLY EXCEPTION: ROTC Uniforms on their required day.  I will verify mandatory uniform day(s) for next week with ROTC.  If you are dressed for ROTC on that day, I will count it as as "festive" day for you since you have no choice.

2.  You need to be in class on time, no late passes.  You must be present all 5 days, too.

3.  You must wear it ALL DAY.  No cheating.  I'll find out. ;)

4.  You need to be dressed in the theme of the day.  According to the email we received last week, the themes are:

Monday - "Comfy Cozy Christmas."

To me, this means appropriate Christmas PJs, Christmas t-shirt, Christmas pants or leggings, etc.  Again, I will count Winter or any December Holiday theme.

Tuesday - Santa, Elf, or Reindeer Attire

Be creative.  And yes, I'll accept a t-shirt with Santa, Elves, etc. on it...let me re,d you of that rule about it being appropriate (some shirts have some very funny sayings but are 100% NOT appropriate for school...those won't count.)

Wednesday - Holiday Colors.
Red, green, silver, gold, blue, white, & any combo of them.  Be festive & fun.  Wear mismatched clothes int he colors.  Be creative. As long as you are Christmas-y, winter-y - you're good.  Get the idea?

Thursday - Formal Wear
Get decked out in your favorite fancy Holiday or Winter Wear.  While they say "formal" (which means dressy), I will count any nice, neat outfit that fits the holidays.  Dress, skirt, blouse, button down shirt, slacks, holiday tie, etc.

Friday - Ugly Apparel
Ugly sweater, shirt, pants, dress, etc. Don't have one?  Be creative!  Attach ornaments to a t-shirt, tape on some garland, etc.  It's supposed to be hideous.  That's the fun of it.  :)

What do you win?  Everyone who participates every day & is in class, on time, will get 10 points added to their 2nd MP average.  That's right, 10 points.

And just to get us all in the spirit of things, I will participate with you.  I have no idea what I'll do for for a few of the days but like you, I have a week to figure it out!

So...who's in for 10 points?  Email me (dramo@bufsd.org) with your 1st & last name & class period for you to be added to the list to check off each day next week (12/16.)  Deadline to email your participation is Thursday, 12/12, 5 pm sharp.

Packet Reminder

Whether or not we do all of it together in class, your entire packet for each chapter must be complete when turned in on the due date.  This has been posted before & said many times in class so should be a surprise to no one.  This includes document as well as video questions.

Next 3 Weeks

You will need at least Chapters 25 & 26 to use in class before the break, possibly part of Ch 27.

If you did not copy them when due, get them copied now.

Or get zeros in class when you're called on when you are unprepared.

And then risk failing the marking period.

And maybe the entire course.

Quizlet & Other Info

Hope you all had a relaxing 5 days off & are ready to hit the ground running tomorrow.  A snow day would have been nice, but since that's not happening, but sure to use your extra time with no homework to get caught up on what you need for class as well as the upcoming homework starting this week.  See you tomorrow!

1.  Some of you continue to tell me you are not approved in Quizlet but followed the directions regarding my username requirements.  As of this posting, there are NO PENDING STUDENTS WITH THE PROPER USERNAME.  There are, however, several pending without the proper username & will not be approved until they are changed.  If you applied to join the class but still can;t see my study sets, then you're one of these people.  FIX YOUR USERNAME!!

2.  Only 3 More Fridays until Christmas break!!  MAKE THEM COUNT!!!
Breakdown: 11 classes, 1 sub day (I'm at a Conference), 1 Quiz day, 2 Exam days.

3.  Only 2 more Fridays until Progress Reports.

4.  Your work for December & through the first day back in January was posted before Thanksgiving.  Make the decision to do it all, on time, and to study!

5.  After we get back from Christmas Break, there are only 2 weeks left for grades in the 2nd MP.  That's it.  There is no time to recover from not doing your work or not studying...get it all done when it's due!

"Quiz" or Test?" You Decide!

I have to figure out if I want to count your "old style questions" test as a test or a quiz.  I'm torn, so I'm letting you decide.  Email me by the start of school on 11/12 with your vote.  Here are the arguments for & against:

Use as a QUIZ grade:
PRO: Isn't weighted as heavy as a test; will not be a full period (30 questions max)
CON: If you do better on straight-forward, old-style content questions, it won't count as much as a test grade (so won;t help your average as much as a good test grade.)

Use as a TEST grade:
PRO: If you do well on those mini quizzes in class, this is a test with those kinds of questions.  It carries equal weight to a stimulus exam.
CON: It's another assessment; it's a full period (50 questions old-school style exam)

Email me with your vote.  Your email must have your 1st & last name with class period in the subject field for your email to be opened & your vote counted!

"When is the make-up?"

I'm getting a little frustrated with the lack of reading many of you do.  This is going to be my last post about the subject and the last time I am going to address it here or in class.

My answer to "when is the make up" will always now be "it is on the website."  Make up dates & deadlines are ALWAYS posted with the assignment.  ALWAYS.  Every time, every single time, I have asked someone who has said "when are the make ups," they admit they have not actually read the post past the date of the test, etc.  This is your responsibility.   I've said it for 2 months.  After the crazy number of absences last Friday, I was asked "when is the make up" in person & by email SEVENTEEN TIMES.  No more.

You have a field trip?  It's your job to know the make up schedule.
Have an assembly?  It's your job to know the make up schedule.
Absent for the day?  It's your job to know the make up schedule.

As for "but I can't get there before school," my responses are the same as they have been for the last 3 years: "then don't be absent since everything is announced in advance" and "figure something out before the deadline."

You made a choice to miss class on the day you knew you had a quiz, test, etc.  That means you also knew you would have to make it up...and since the make up info was posted, you had all the information needed to make the decision that s best for you.

Yes, things happen.  Yes, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances.  These do not include Guidance appointments, assemblies, field trips, music lessons, or arriving late to class. If I make an exception for one of you, I have to make it for all of you to be fair.  That's why there are class policies.  They are posted online, they were sent home, they were signed, and they are posted with every assignment I give you.

So...as we start the 2nd marking period, please keep all of these items in mind.  Start reading the entire post, and be sure you can make something up if you are gong to miss class.

I'm glad we have hat all cleared up.  I hope you enjoyed your day off.  See you tomorrow.

TEST 11/1: Ch 23 Exam & Video packet

Your Chapter 23 Exam will be on Friday, 11/1.  The Quizlet Review has been open since 10/11.  If you have been in class, paid attention, done your homework, and study you should do very well on the test.  STUDY THE REVIEW IN QUIZLET - it was made using the material on your exam.  Remember, all previous chapters are fair game to show up on your exam so be sure to review those topics in Quizlet, too!

Your Chapter 23 Video packets are due at the start of class on this day as well.

Make up for legal absences is before school (per my make-up policy), last day to make up is Wednesday, 11/6 .

If you can't come before school to make up the exam don't be absent for it!

QUIZ 10/28: Ch 23 Vocabulary Quiz

Vocabulary Quiz on these on Monday, 10/28.  Your words will be due at that time.  You may write them out as a list on paper OR you may write each on a flash card (use a flashcard for the required homework heading.)   Required homework heading must be used.  Use your knowledge, notes, online textbook, handouts, or the Internet to find the definitions.

Homework Heading (required on all work submitted):

Your Name                                                   Global II
Class Period                                                Assignment
(in this case, your assignment is Ch 23 Vocab)

If you are making flashcards they MUST be rubber-banded together BEFORE submitting AND BEFORE the bell rings (there are rubber bands behind my desk - ask me!), and your top card must be a heading card (see above.)  You will get extra credit for making flash cards.

Make up for legal absences is before school (per my make-up policy), last day to make up is Wednesday, 10/30.

Copy & paste the link below for the Vocab list.  Yes, it is Chapter 23:

Remember - all previous vocab words are fair game & will also show up n this quiz!

10/18 Updates...

Let's try this again...

Next week I hope to be well enough to be off most of the meds & get back to our regular routine.  Thanks for doing your work while I've been home.  Believe me, as the teacher, it is way harder & more work to stay home than it is to come to school.  I was there today but went home sick after 5th period.

So, here are some updates:

1.  Review your Chapter 23 notes from the beginning to where you ended last week.  You will be having quick, mini quizzes on them next week.  No notes allowed.

3.  We learned something at a Guidance assembly today: apparently you can "rent" (I assume for free) a personal hotspot to use at home for up to 2 weeks from the Brentwood Public Library with your Public Library card.  If you have issues with internet service at home, you may want to look into this service.

4.  Sub work from yesterday has been graded but not yet entered into Thinkwave.

5.  Report card grades will be entered in less than 3 weeks.  Keep on top of your work, what's due, check the blog daily, etc.

6.  A lot of you have been cutting while I've been out.  Please note that you get a 0 when you cut.  Sub work that is left for you are all content &/or skills based regents materials.  It is far from busy work.  So, in addition to these 0s, you have lost the chance to practice some much-needed sills.

Have a great weekend & see you Monday, ready to move ahead!

Sub Work Graded

The sub work from Tuesday has been graded & entered in Thinkwave.

If you were legally absent, please follow the directions/notes posted with the assignment by the deadline.

Chapter 22 Packet Questions from Today

While I did find the Chapter 22 Video Packet after school today, I cannot find  post for you (from this year) with a link to those videos, so I am not counting it

Ricardo Amaya...

Your binder is in our classroom.  You can pick it up before 7:25 in you need if for other classes (it is on the heater by the windows) or when you come to class Thursday if it is only for Global.

RAK Wall Reminders

Just a reminder that the "RAK Wall" is open for business any day I'm in school.  See the original post for details.  You can take an index card before the stat of class & return it either at the end of class OR the next day.  Remember your kind deed does not have to take place in school, but it would be nice if it did!

PSAT/SAT Day is October 16th!

Remember, Wednesday 10/16 is a regular school day...and you will take the PSAT if in 11th grade or the SAT if in 12th grade
(goes by credits earned.)

My understanding is the PSAT you $17 while the SAT costs $50-65.  The District is paying these fees for EVERYONE.  This is NOT a "blow off school day."  This is an opportunity to take these exams for FREE.

You are required to bring pencils & a calculator to the exam.  Very few pencils will be available and no calculators will be provided for the PSAT (they WILL give you a calculator to use if you are a 12th grader taking the SAT.)  If you do not bring a calculator to the PSAT, you will not have one for the math portion of the exam.

This is a GREAT opportunity to see where your weakness is - if you have any - & start to work toward a higher score for the SAT.

You will be released after the exam is over and "regular buses" will take you home.  Be on the lookout for a letter sent home by Mr. Callan & those annoying "robo calls" to remind you of what to do.  Pay attention to you 1st & 2nd period teachers Thursday as they will have your room assignments for the exam.

Test is till tomorrow

Your Chapter 22 Exam is still tomorrow, as scheduled.

I have gone through each of your Quizlet accounts and see that very few of you have prepared for the exam as of this post.

Keep in mind hat your actions will determine what we do in class, not the rewards you wrote Thursday.

See you tomorrow.

Period 7

I was able to read your responses to my question before I left school Thursday.  I am pleased to say that you are unanimous in wanted to change our ways to be more successful.  Now, however, it's time to prove that to me.

We are still in Ch 23 Sec 2.  Should you come to class unprepared with any Ch 23 notes (or any other notes moving forward), you will have thrown your last chance away.  No one should be in our class any more without their notes, highlighters, handouts, pens, & HW.  Everyone should show several rounds of completed study in Quizlet.

This is the only way for you to prove to me that you're serious, and it starts Monday.

There are no more lates.  No more missing work.  No more "I can't find it, didn't do it, don't have it" responses.

No. More.

If there is just one more instance of any of those for you, you have chosen "the other way," which is clearly not working for you.

I am cheering for you to succeed.

See you Monday.

Class Work tomorrow

I have a personal day tomorrow so I will not be in.  However, I have left you work I had scheduled to give you in class.  Directions have been left that you are to work silently & independently, with all work turned in at the end of your class period.  I will be grading it, you will have a zero if it isn't done.  Work quickly & efficiently.  Work will not be accepted late.  Be sure your full name & class period is on all work.

See you Monday.

Thinkwave Entry

Thinkwave has been updated to reflect those of you who have competed the assignment of signing in.  If you have a 0, you have until tonight to sign it & have that changed by me tomorrow.  After tonight, the zero remains.

That's FOUR easy test grades this MP to boost your average:
1. Return signed Expectation (had almost 2 weeks)
2. Return completed Contact form (had almost 2 weeks)
3. Create a free account in Quizlet (had more than 2 weeks)
4. Sign into Thinkwave (you've had at least 10 school days to do this)

That should be 4 100s as test grades.  That should have made it very easy to get a great average for the 1st marking period.  I hope you took advantage of these gifts.

Thinkwave Clarifications

1.  If you have previously signed into to Thinkwave, it is not necessary to sign in again today.  As long as I see you have signed in & changed your password at some point prior to tonight, you've met the assignment criteria.

2.  Anything that is "blank" in Thinkwave is not counted in your average.  It is waiting for a grade or you were exempt from that assignment.  If you were not exempt, did not do it, or did not make it up by the deadline there is a 0, which does count in your average.

DUE Tuesday, 10/8: Signed Thinkwave Printout

You will receive a Thinkwave print out in class tomorrow, 10/3.  You are required to return it to me on Tuesday, 10/8.  It must be signed by your parent/guardian.

There are no outstanding grades for Global as of this posting, including today's HWQs.  If I had to enter report card grades tomorrow, the average in Thinkwave right now is what you have earned.  This is what will be used for our progress reports.

This will count as a test grade: 0 or 100.  You have it on 10/8: 100.  It isn't turned in signed on 10/8, 0.

If you are absent tomorrow you will have to print out your student summary grade report, with all grades & current average, on your own as these sheets will only be available tomorrow in class.  You are not exempt & the deadline will not be extended.

Based on your average you fall into one of 2 categories:
#1:  Keep up the great work!  Your hard work, time & effort really shows & is paying off!

#2: You need a "Plan B," since your plan is not leading you to success.  You cannot pass without being in class, doing your HW, making up work when absent, or studying.  Fix it NOW before it is too late!

I hope you fall into Category #1!  If not, change your ways so you do!

Check September Postings for work due in October!

As a reminder, your work due in October was posted in September, so it will still be listed in September on the right side menu.  It will NOT show up under the October menu.  Please keep this in mind as you look for what's due if you don't start it in advance.  I always post early to give you plenty of time to get the work done at your own pace, but this means that you may need to click on the previous month to see the posting.

Failing or Close? Read Me.

I have never understood the question "How am I failing?"  The answer is almost always "because you didn't do your work."  If you are currently failing the 1st marking period, keep reading:

1. Did you submit your signed & completed Expectation & Contact Form Sheets?  If you did, a 100 is in Thinkwave.  If you did not there is a 0.  If you did not, you have one final chance to turn it the missing form(s) at the start of your class on Wednesday, 10/2.  This is the 3rd extension & will not be pushed further for any reason, including absences.  Forms were given to every student either the 1st day or when you entered our class.  Please find them as necessary & submit.  If not, the 0 stays.

2.  Did you sign up for Quizlet?  If you did, by the deadline, with the appropriate username, yo have 100 entered.  If there is a 0, you did not do one of the required steps above.  You have until Tuesday, 10/1, to fix it for a 65.  No grades will be changed after that date.

Also, if you had a proper username & then changed it, I deleted you.  I check weekly for this, and delete anyone who does not follow the guidelines I set up for Quizlet.

3.  Classwork grades of 0 - if you were legally absent on a day we did classwork, but you have a 0 for the assignment in Thinkwave, you must email me no later than Wednesday, 10/2 to have it changed before progress reports are done.  Your email must have your full name & class period in the subject field to be open or it goes into spam.  Your email must include the date(s) & names of assignments before I'll spend the time looking up your records in Eschool.  You can use the assignment names & dates in Thinkwave.  I will then check your attendance records.  If you are correct, I will remove the 0.  If not, it stays.

4. Absent but never made u the work you missed (not classwork) - sorry.  Deadlines are listed in every assignment.  Once a make up deadline had passed, work is fair game to go back to you &, therefore, no more make ups are allowed.  Those grades will not be changed.  If you fall into this category, please be more responsible regarding deadlines from absences.

TEST Wednesday, 10/2: Thinkwave Sign-In

You are required to sign into Thinkwave no later than Wednesday, 10/2.  Signing in will count as a test grade.  Thinkwave shows me the lst date & time you accessed your grades, which is how I will issue grades for this assignment.

If you do not have or lost your Thinkwave code, you must email me by Sunday, 9/29.  These were given out in class nearly 2 weeks ago.  The subject of your email must include your full name & class period to be opened & not sent to spam.  I cannot give you the code in school as I cannot print from Thinkwave there.

Failure to email by Sunday, if necessary, will result in a delay in your received a new code.  The deadline to access Thinkwave will not be extended.

90% of your work has been graded & entered as of 8 pm last night.

RAK Wall

RAK = Random Acts of Kindness

To enjoy a pretzel, you must do the following:
1. On an index card in the green bin by my desk, write one nice thing you did for someone else since your class ended yesterday.  There had to be absolute no gain in this act for you.  The sole purpose & result of the act was to make someone else feel good, better, or valued.
2. Pin the card to the RAK Wall in the back of our classroom with a push pin (also found in the green bin...be careful) at the END of class.
3.  You may take 2 pretzels after completing this task (the amount may vary moving forward based on the size of the pretzels I'm able to buy.)
4.  You may only write one card per day.

Writing must be big enough to read from the front row.  Write your RAK on he front, write your name & class period on the back.  Pin the card with the RAK facing out.

Cards must be taken before the stat of class & pinned at the end of class.  You may not write out the card while we are working on something else unless you are finished with that assignment.  Violations of an of these procedures or rules will render you ineligible for 5 class days.

Starts Wednesday, 9/25.

My RAK?  I buy the pretzels.
